Go As a River

Water scarcity debates have framed water as a commodified good provided to customers. My work challenges this assumption by urging viewers to imagine the river –and connected watershed– as something other than commodities: Go As a River is a media projection installation that views the San Lorenzo River, a central vein running through Santa Cruz, California, as a source of many histories. Aural interviews with community members and imagery reflecting the beauty of the river address its unique water issues and unveil the community’s relationships with the river. Go As a River encourages participants to come together to collectively ponder the future of water issues.
"Without a community or sangha, we cannot go far. The sangha is our body and we are like the cells of the same organism. When we walk, we walk as one. When we sit, we sit as one. We practice collectively and move forward on our spiritual path as one body of water." –Thich Nhat Hanh
